When people in the media are comparing you to Boy George, Uncle Fester, and Stewie Griffin, a lot of people would start taking stock of their lives. When you are Nicky Power, and have not only won hundreds of thousands of pounds playing poker, but are also the type of poker player that big websites want to sponsor, who cares what the pundits think? Nicky has gone from playing poker freerolls to the ranks Europe’s most recognizable poker pros with astonishing ease and speed.
In 2004, Nicky Power was just finishing up his Masters Degree in Accounting. Apparently he decided to celebrate by adding online poker to is list of hobbies. He started playing poker freerolls, and found he was rather good at it. While playing poker online, he also found a local game at a favorite pub. His advanced degree in accounting meant that he had a head for number, and his lifetime of experience with stud and draw poker gave him the sort of experience that a lot of other poker players simply didn’t have. In other words, hold’em came easy to him. Less than a year into his new hobby, Power was winning the Irish Christmas Poker Festival, No Limit Hold'em Main Event. Suddenly being an accountant didn’t seem so interesting, and life as one of Europe’s top poker pros was more appealing. Since his start, he has done very well in some of Europe’s more high profile tournaments, including Annual Irish Poker Classic, were he had his biggest payday to date.
Nicky is very popular not only to his fans, but to other poker players. He is his chatty, gregarious, and while No Limit Texas Hold’em is very serious business, he seems never to forget that it is also a game…and he plays it as such. This is a refreshing change from some of the more uber-serious folks out there.
Nicky Power now represent BoylePoker.com, and will be playing tournaments with their patch on his chest.
