Why Make Pointless Plays?

Why Make Pointless Plays?

If you ask someone why they made a particular play, they often reply, "I wanted to see what would happen." Let us be clear about this. If you're not making a play to either win money or prevent yourself from losing money, you're making a pointless play. There is simply no reason to make a pointless play in poker. All you're doing is throwing away chips. Now, why would you want to throw away chips?

Still, people end up making pointless plays over and over again, out of curiosity, ignorance, or simple stupidity. They bet good money on decent or trash hands. They set up bluffs and then give up on them. Pointless plays abound.

A lot of this comes from the players who play for fun. Because of this, you see it most often in online play money casinos, where there's no real risk involved in making a pointless move. These are the testing rooms for various strategies and plays, but a lot of players make plays just to see what happens. This isn't part of the learning process. This is reckless and morbid curiosity.

Even in the play money casinos you should never make a pointless play.
