Variety Is the Spice of Life

Variety Is the Spice of Life

We live in a very big world with lots of stuff in it. Hostess fruit pies come in a number of different flavors, not just cherry, while we can order our hamburgers with literally dozens of different kinds of cheese on them. Even when it comes to something as anonymously indispensable as toilet tissue our choices range from pillow soft, to benignly unremarkable, to something that feels like sandpaper. With this in mind, what sort of sense does it make to play Texas Holdem and only Texas Holdem?

People can do what they like, and if they are happy playing one game out of the many varieties of poker there are out there, that is their personal business. They are robbing themselves of a way to become even better at Holdem though.

From a human nature standpoint, doing the same thing over and over again leads to stagnation. After a while your moves become robotic and a player can become very predictable. By taking the occasional break from Holdem and spending some time playing Omaha or Stud you now have to force your brain to think in other ways. This will not only result in a sharper mind, but the vacation from Holdem may also give you some insight on other players that will be valuable down the line.

There is nothing wrong with sticking with something you like, but then there is also no harm in mixing things up a bit. Remember, a change is as good as a rest.
