To Talk or Not?

To Talk or Not?

Presentation at the table is important in poker. How you act affects how the other players perceive you and how they react to you. You can present a lot of different attitudes at the table to change these perceptions, and one thing that has to be considered is how verbal you want to be.

Next time you play, pay attention to how much you and your opponents speak. Some will be very talkative, either about the game or just telling jokes and making small talk. Some will limit their speech to the game itself and stay out of conversations. Some will say nothing at all.

Those that say nothing at all tend to (at least try to) be inscrutable, giving little or no information as to their attitudes, emotions, or personality. They're serious about the game. So serious that they refuse to give even the slightest bit of information to their opponents. But many of them give all the information away by body language.

Those that only speak about the game are also serious about the game, but they're not above having a little bit of socializing involved. They're generally more relaxed than the silent types, and while they don't control their words sometimes, they often have better control over what their body is saying.

Finally, those who talk a lot are doing one of two things. Either they enjoy socializing with the other players and having a good time, or they're trying to distract the table. Watch out for them, they might have something up their sleeve (and maybe not just metaphorically).

Use your speech as part of your tactics to present yourself the way you want to be.
