Have you ever followed the path of a single chip as it moves around and around the poker table? You'd be surprised to see just how much that one little piece of plastic moves during the course of the game. It will belong to many owners over the course of its time spent on the table, some for longer than others. It will be thrown, scooped, and picked. If there was some tiny Seussian being living inside it, he would be quite dizzy after all its travels.
The path of this one chip illustrates the ups and downs of a poker game quite well. The amount of money exchanging hands can be great, and its frequency so great as to make Wall Street look tame. Money moves at the poker table, and it moves quickly.
What does this mean for the individual player? Don't become attached to your stacks. They're going to move around, you're going to lose chips to other players, and in turn, they're going to lose their chips to you. The money will move around the table, and if you're doing good, a lot of it will gravitate towards you. However, to do this, you need to use your stacks. You can't win any money in poker without first risking some of your own, and if you become too attached to those chips in front of you, you won't ever get any of those chips sitting in front of your opponents.
