The Brave Poker Bankroll

The Brave Poker Bankroll

The poker tournament has only been going for a few hands and you flop top pair with a weak kicker. You are the last to act and it gets checked to you, so you bet half the pot and get one caller. The turn is no help, so you bet about half the pot again, and again get called. The river isn't doing anything for you, and you still only have a top pair. You bet half the pot again and then wait, heart thumping in your chest, waiting for the other player to push you all in, signifying that he has you beat all along.

It takes a lot of guts to play poker correctly, to face those moments when you are taking a risk that could knock out all your hard work or ruin your chance at the big cash. But did you know you could be playing with scared money?

If you sit down to a game that is out of your league bankroll-wise, then you are playing with scared money. This means that you really can't afford to lose the money you have invested in the game, and this will lead to you making calls and taking actions that are designed to protect your bankroll first, and follow proper poker strategy second.

Playing scared is one of the best ways to go broke. The example above would not be so scary if you knew that you could buy into an event right afterwards, or in a cash game, that you had the proper 100 to 300 times the big blind in your pocket to stay in the game.
