Wait, isn't that backwards? The original line, often quoted by football coaches and armchair generals is, "the best defense is a good offense." That's true, at least in football and war, but poker is neither. Unlike coaching a football game or planning a military offensive, poker is personal, eye to eye, and sometimes the rules don't mean a thing.
That being said, there's a decent military analogy to make here. There's a reason why smaller nations usually don't mess with superpowers. The little nations know that the superpowers have huge reserves of resources, and there's no way that a little country can ever compete with that.
Take that analogy back to the poker table. In poker, you have two resources at your disposal: your hand and your chips. Your hand is fleeting, it changes constantly, and anyone at the table can at anytime pull together a better hand than yours. You really can't help it. Your other resource, your chips, on the other hand, is a resource you have almost complete control of. The only way you're guaranteed to lose your chips is through the blinds, otherwise you're in complete control.
Now, your chips are not only your winnings and losings, but they're also your leverage, and you should use them as such. A big pile is harder to take than a little one and it gives you more room to bluff and take chances, thus your goal should always be to protect your pile. As long as you have your leverage, your weaker opponents can't touch you.
