Have you ever been caught driving behind an octogenarian who treats the speed limit like a suggestion and feels that the biggest contribution to society is teaching us "young wipper-snappers" that there is nothing wrong with going 25mph on the freeway? While anybody below the age where visiting nurse is among daily necessities will agree that the type of people mentioned above should give up their licenses and be taught to use public transportation, a lot of poker players behave at the table like an elderly driver.
People play very slowly for various reasons. Sometimes it is simply inexperience that has them overanalyzing every aspect of the game, while some experienced players simply do have problems making up their minds on hands that could go either way. Some less desirable players drag their feet deliberately so that they can frustrate some of their opponents into going tilt. Regardless of the reason, nobody appreciates a pokey player.
Poker is not just a game, but players are part of a community as well. Within any community there are rules, both written and unwritten, that help everyone to get on as well as humanly possible, and reduce conflicts. Players who cannot keep pace with the table, for whatever reason, are being rather rude and disrespectful to the people who are playing properly.
In short, if you can't keep pace with the table, the best thing for everyone is to get out of the way.
