On the surface it would appear that somebody with a large, soft posterior is naturally built for sitting. Nature (or the Hostess Snack Cake company) it seems has provided them with a natural pillow. Theoretically this would be an advantage in any competition that involves a lot of sitting whether it be one of those strange Japanese game shows where two people sit on blocks of ice until somebody can't deal with a frozen backside anymore or a poker tournament. Like many topics that seem logical when two dimensional thinking is applied, somebody whose diet and exercise program consists of fudge and watching Celebrity Fit Club on VH1 is actually at a huge disadvantage at the poker table.
There is a direct relationship between somebody's fitness levels, nutrition, and how they will perform over the long haul during a poker tournament or a marathon cash game.
The brain needs a lot of things to function at optimum levels. Oddly enough alcohol, pizza, and Red Bull are not on the list of necessary fuels to keep your mind clicking along with mechanical efficiency. The basics of brain function are that deficiencies in such things as iron and vitamin B12 can lead to seriously impaired cognitive functions. This doesn't mean that you will be seeing pink elephants or talking to people who aren't there, but you will not be thinking very sharply. This is probably a handicap when you are playing Texas Holdem. Remember, hot wings and Schlitz may not be feeding your brain properly and helping you get ready for some serious poker.
Body conditioning is also an issue at the poker table. Most of the best players also log some serious time in the gym. Players like Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth make working out a staple of their lives in order to be physically ready for the rigors of a grueling tournament. Much of this is because a body that is in better shape can metabolize calories more efficiently, and once again, this keeps your brain well fed and alert.
Nobody is saying a player has to win Mr. Olympia, or have their own fitness show, but a little attention to diet and exercise will help your game immensely.
