Scorching Your Bridges

Scorching Your Bridges

Somebody once said that all was fair in love and war. Achilles took this to almost ridiculous lengths when he and the Greeks waged years of warfare against Troy all because of a Spartan king who lost his lost his beautiful bride, Helen, to a smooth talking Trojan named Paris. While burning bridges, both figuratively and literally in this case is permissible under the love/warfare model, doing so over a poker tournament would probably fall under the "reprehensible" category.

A couple of years ago Jamie Gold won the World Series of Poker Main Event, but because of some deals made that included Bodog paying his Main Event buy-in, his commitment to bring celebrities on board under the Bodog banner, and some other financial arrangements that included a third party named Crispin Leyser, his winnings were held up in court for months. Gold was accused of reneging on his end of the deal and in the end wound up paying Leyser an undisclosed amount of money. Bodog, unhappy with Gold as well, made it very clear they want nothing to do with the poker champ.

This year we had a similar situation with Tiffany "Hot Chips" Michelle. Tiffany had turned her back on her employment and sponsorship deal with PokerNews.com for the chance to wear the UltimateBet.Net logo. The reasons for this are currently unclear, and it might be a while before the villain is identified in this particular deal, but the aftermath of it is that PokerNews.com will no longer support UltimateBet with reviews or announcements. It is probably a sure bet that there will be a slew of negative news posted at PokerNews about UltimateBet.

On top of that, Tiffany will probably be persona non grata when it comes to news stories and if things go sour with UltimateBet, chances are she will never be let back in the office doors.

Burning bridges when it comes to playing poker is always a possibility, especially when a lot of people get their buy-ins paid by eager investors. As shown in the examples above, a burnt bridge can have long lasting effects that are good for nobody.
