According to most eggheads, discovery channel shows, and the cartoon "Dexter's Lab" the human body is seventy-five percent water. Considering how many cocktail waitresses are stalking the floors of casinos and dispensing free drinks one would think that the casino believed that people were made mostly of scotch. Of course from the standpoint of the people who run a gaming floor, sobriety and gambling don't go well together. Even at the poker tables, a place where the house has no vested interest in who wins, the drinks still flow freely.
Even those who think they are doing themselves a favor by staying away from fermented products and simply drinking soda and coffee while playing Holdem, they still aren't helping their game. Caffeine will help dehydrate a body as surely as a sun lamp will. There are effects on the body that dehydration has that will impact your ability to be your best at the poker table.
A dehydrated body will experience an uptick in fatigue, memory problems, and the inability to concentrate. This can be especially damaging during tournament play when your breaks are scheduled by the tournament organizers. At least in a cash game you can get up whenever you want and take a break.
Poker is a social game, and social occasions go hand in hand with drinking. The negative effects of dehydration can be countered by simply adding a few glasses of water to your table libations.
