Playing Against the Weak

Playing Against the Weak

The jungle is ruled by certain laws: the strong pick on the weak. This is why leopards rarely tackle anything larger than an antelope and if a lion decides to forego a zebra for a more challenging water buffalo, he brings a bunch of friends with him. If this unwritten rule of survival is good enough for large, predatory cats that are lethally pointy at five out of six ends, then it is good enough for a poker player.

Those who want to make money playing poker should put their ego aside. This is not a test of strength. You don't want to play against people where there is a question about whether or not they are your equal - you want to be the bully in the room picking on the nerds from the AV club.

Finding the people who are weaker than you in an online room is not that difficult. Most of the lobbies provide information like flop percentages, pot sizes, etc. By looking at the room statistics a player should be able to decide whether or not the room is sufficiently below their skill level.

Another good way to figure out where the weaklings are is the room's table limit. In general, more skillful players play at the higher limit tables. Whatever you believe your personal level is, you should play one level below it.

There is no shame in picking on weaker players. You may also being doing them a favor. While you are taking their money, they are learning some valuable lessons. The ones who aren't learning will simply be winnowed out.
