Let's face it, when you're playing poker, you're in the business of misery. You're not causing cheer and joy. You're causing anger and suffering. Hopefully, your opponents and you can leave these feelings at the table, but when it all comes down to it, everyone sitting at that table is out to cause misery with everyone else at that table. It's the nature of the game.
We like to think that people are generally adverse to causing misery towards one another. Sure, wars, crimes, and prejudices would serve to argue otherwise, but we also have charity, honesty and courtesy that would serve this case. We generally want to be good to each other.
But in poker, we definitely shouldn't. There is nothing to be gained from being nice when playing poker - if you were playing a team game, things might be otherwise, but you're not. You're playing all by yourself, and you're playing against everyone else. It's a dog eat dog game, and there's no room for charity.
The quicker you accept that your darker side is the one you want to bring to the table with you, the quicker you will realize how ruthless and uncaring you actually have to be if you want to be successful at the table. You're in the business of profiting from misery. There's no question about it, and sympathy, charity and hospitality are all out of the question.
You're in the business of misery to win.
