Middle Stacks Are the Best Targets in a Tournament

As we get into the tournament season the narrative isn't just about what cards to play, but also about whom to play them against.

Everyone likes to pick on the small stacks. There is nothing wrong with this generally speaking. As competitors we all like to take the scalp of an opponent and call it a trophy. The problem with attacking the small stack is that these players often have nothing to lose. The all in bet becomes their last ditch defense and they will obviously take that hand all the way to the river. Strategy and gamesmanship are out the window at that point, and luck takes over. This is not a position that good poker players want to put themselves in. Too many bad things happen on the river.

It is a strategically bad idea to target the big stacks as well. Despite the fact that they have all those lovely chips, and you want your shot at them, they can survive a few losses, and will hang in hands to the end just to teach you a lesson. If they wind up winning, they will add your chips to their already prodigious stacks. If they lose, it is just a small, survivable dent. Big stacks need to be chipped away during hands when you have the advantage, not be made the object of targeted attacks.

Medium size stacks are the best targets. Middle stacks are generally the wishy washy players at the table (the real gunslingers either have the small stacks as a result of taking too many big risks, or they have the big stacks because their aggression has paid off.) If you force these people into uncomfortable decisions, many times they will play not to lose, instead of playing to win. In short, they don't have the chips to bully you, and matching your aggression would mean risking putting their stack at risk. In other words, these are good guys to pick on. Just watch out when they show aggression. They probably have a really good hand.

  Good Luck!
