Methodical Play

Methodical Play

Doing things by "the method" is often considered to be the best way to do something. After all, that's why these methods developed: they are the codified, hard wired, "best" way to do things, and people go by them because they prove to be effective and successful. Following the method for proper car maintenance will leave you with more unhampered and safe motoring. Following the method for cooking a roast will reward you with a delicious and juicy chunk of meat.

Poker is different, however, often times, the method is not the best way to go about doing something, and in fact, sticking to the method can result in more ill consequences than good ones.

Playing methodically in poker can also be called playing ploddingly. Methodical play opens the opportunity to your opponents for them to easily predict your next move and take their own moves to counter it. Methodical poker telegraphs your intentions and plans, making it all the easier for your opponents to sabotage them.

There are methods to play poker, successful ones at that, but if you dedicate yourself to exclusively following a method, you will do more harm to your game than good.
