Make 'em Pay

Anybody who walks into a casino poker room with the attitude of "Hey, I'm just here for fun" either has more money than they could ever spend, or has had an aneurysm burst somewhere in their brain. Poker is a blast to play, of this there is no doubt. It is a near perfect merging of luck and strategy, but let's be honest, we play poker at the casino to win money. If we were simply going somewhere to give away money and drink, strip clubs would be a far more attractive option.

Let's say you have been dealt a pair of Aces as your hole cards. There is a lot of conventional wisdom that says drive people out of the pot and get while the getting is good. Of course there was also a lot of conventional wisdom that said Chamberlain should make nice with Hitler. That didn't really turn out very well.

Before the flop with a pair of aces or similarly impressive cards, you will want to act aggressively, and make it expensive for people to see your cards. If you are in a group with a bunch of passive players, this would make conventional wisdom very happy because most of them would fold. If you are in a loose game, this will just trigger your opponents' "chase" instinct and get them to feed the pot.

No matter how you look at it, premium hands are rare occurrences and those who are hanging around to see what cards you are jealously protecting should pay a high price for the privilege.
