Don't Surrender to a Chip Count

Don't Surrender to a Chip Count

The final table of a tournament is obviously a great place to be. Not only is it a testament to your skill, stamina, and the ability to keep your head in stressful situation, but it also means you are finishing in the money. The only drawback to that is that the celebratory beers are probably going to be on your tab. During this year's World Series of Poker we have seen a lot of really great plays, but over the course of the events we have also seen a lot of players give up at the final table.

While no names or situations will be mentioned here, there has been more than one player who was sitting at the lower half of the final table chip count, and decided they were happy with a final table paycheck. In short, chip counts don't necessarily win championships.

This year, more often than not, somebody has come from the middle of the pack to cut the chip leader down to size and claim a WSOP bracelet. We have even seen bottom of the chip count rallies that have resulted in stunning victories. Even in heads-up play, a lot of 2 to 1 chip leads have been erased. Dominating, tape to tape, final table performances have been rare this year.

When you get to a final table, remember that the chip lead doesn't equal a victory. Those who give up and go all-in just to end their day will never have a chance to see if they could have come back. Sometimes the difference between victory and defeat is a matter of will.
