Distract Yourself

Distract Yourself

Casinos are loud, over the top places by design. Theoretically it will make people more excited and help separate them from the contents of their wallets. K-Mart tried this with a flashing blue light. They would put it in the aisle where they have cut the prices on small consumer goods, and people were supposed to flock to the blue light and spend their hard earned cash like Pavlov's dog salivating at the sound of a bell. While you are seated at a poker table in your favorite casino, the sounds going on around you may not be all you have to block out. Some poker players are loud and try to distract their opponents with conversation and overly demonstrative behavior.

The way to beat this uncontrolled noise is to counter it with a healthy dose of controlled noise. Sometimes besides a pair of Aces in their hand, the iPod is a poker player's best friend.

When you watch a major tournament, you will see little iPod earbuds hanging from the heads of players like Vanessa Rousso, Joe Hachem, and Erica Schoenberg. They are not wearing these because the sudden urge to hear Nine Inch Nails became so overwhelming they couldn't wait till the break, it is because they are using their favorite tunes to overpower the sounds going on around them, and limiting their distractions.

Music, though pleasant, can quickly turn into white noise that becomes no more distracting than the music that plays in the background of most Hollywood films. It is the sudden noises that can temporarily throw one off their game, or the attempts by another player to engage you in conversation.

So grab your earbuds and lose yourself in your favorite music in order to improve your focus in the casino.
