In a reasonable world the only type of person who Phil Hellmuth would be a role model for is the type who eventually wind up wearing an orange vest and picking up trash along the highways. And we are speaking about Phil's behavior at the tables - not his poker skills here. In a world where people learn poker from their television sets and Tila Tequila, Phil has a forum to corrupt an entire generation of poker players. This was pretty obvious when a number of people using poker blogs were talking about how Hellmuth is never on time for a tournament. This is a legitimate topic of discussion, because Phil is never on time, but many of the younger folks were saying how they liked his bravado, and they have now made the late arrival part of their game.
For those of you who actually believe that this is a good way to play we will make these two points.
First of all, Phil is a prat, a twit, a guy who probably got too many wedgies as a kid. He is also an insanely talented player. Most bloggers who think they are on par with Phil have been sniffing the magic markers again. Phil can usually get by after giving away a piece of his stack by not being there to defend his blinds: most others can't. This strategy even backfires on Hellmuth every now and then.
The second reason is that the early goings of a tournament are usually a demolition derby of bad players. Why would anybody not want to be there to take their chips? In an atmosphere where fish are going extinct faster than the dinosaurs after the asteroid hit, this is prime stack building time. Every minute you are late is an opportunity lost.
