In tournaments, you'll be facing a much greater range of players than you might normally be used to. Depending on the size of the tournament, you may be facing players from around the state, country, or world. They will come from different schools of thought and exhibit different styles of play and table etiquette. The internet has gone a long way to diminishing these differences, but they still exist.
What this means is that you have to be able to adjust your tactics from table to table. Never assume the first table you play at a tournament will be representative of the players at that tournament. You will be in for a terrible shock if you think this way.
This also means that, in some ways, you need to approach each table as a totally new and fresh game. In addition to the fact that each table will be different, you don't want to exhibit a lot of trends that can be used to call you. You want to play fresh and different at each table, while still using successful tactics.
In the end, one of the keys to winning a tournament is the ability to adapt and adjust.
