WSOP Fallout

By now most people are aware that the World Series of Poker has moved the Final Table of the Main Event to November. While many of us question the wisdom of this move, you just have to shrug your shoulders and assume that these folks know what they are doing. Because of the controversial nature of the topic, most of the pros that we have spoken to about this have asked that their comments not go on record, but it would seem there is a divide between the players over whether or not this is a good thing.

The professionals are not overly concerned with television ratings, advertiser revenue, or the folly of trying to compete with the NFL for viewers: they are naturally concerned with their ability to win the sport's biggest prize. After some brief discussions, it is the younger, less experienced players who love the move, and the seasoned veterans of poker who seem opposed to it.

Team PokerStars pro Greg Raymer almost drifted into the realm of "prophet" when he gave us his opinion about this move: "I am very torn over this proposal. The down side is this long gap allows the players to become completely different people between the time they make the final table, and when they play it. You know that all 9 will get coaching, and especially they will get coaching tailored to each of their 8 opponents." It turns out he was absolutely right. Many players who have a longer track record in high school than as professional poker players were in favor of move. This is because they overwhelmingly believe that all they have to do is make it to the final table (not the easiest of tasks), and once they are there, they have months to gather intelligence on their opponents, adjust their game to match their competition, practice, and come back in November prepared for the Championship.

The vets think that this not only blunts momentum, but artificially levels the playing field by giving the less gifted players time to prepare.

For now, in public most of the players will be saying all the politically correct things and pasting a smile on their face when they are asked about this change. Of course there will be a firestorm in November if somebody who just limped into the Final Table comes back and wins the whole thing.
