The politics of gender is a rather uncomfy subject for men, and a topic they can rarely win with. Let's face it, we live in a world where the media either portrays men as brainless baboons who wouldn't be able to successfully open a pickle jar without help from their intellectually and physically superior wife (think "King of Queens") or sexual predators whose biggest decision is to figure out which drink goes best with GHB. Because the portrayal of men is so negative, if anyone even suggested that there be a Men's Only Poker League, that person would be slapped silly with a copy of "Our Bodies, Ourselves" and subjected to a lecture about fairness from uptight activist Martha Burk.
If we can get beyond the obsession with how unfairly women are treated by men, maybe we can see how much of the politically correct attitudes towards women are just a slap in the face to the double X chromosome set.
The World Poker Tour has just announced the launch of its new product: the WPT Ladies League (WPTL). There will be those who hail this as a triumph for progressive and politically correct attitudes, but this makes about as much sense as suggesting that Hillary Clinton can cry her way to the White House.
Nobody, with the possible exception of Annie Duke, will see this as the insult to women that this league really is. There is one of two messages being projected by the World Poker Tour's new product. They are either exploiting the fact that most of the female poker players are easier to look at than their male counterparts (we think most people would agree that Erica Schoenberg is more physically appealing than Mike Matusow), or they are surrendering to the idea that in a game where the brain is one's best weapon, women can't compete with men. So either the WPT is exploiting the inherent sex appeal of the female player base, or they believe that they are giving women a level playing field to compete on. If the truth is the former, it reduces the hard working, highly skilled women of poker to simple eye candy; if it is the latter, it is an insult to the intelligence of those women. Either way this league is not a compliment to ability of the sport's feminine members.
