Whether anybody likes it or not, the World Series of Poker is the measuring stick for poker players. Maybe declaring somebody, "the best" because of their WSOP track record is about as official as Stone Cold Steve Austin anointing himself Pope for the reason that he can probably take the Holy Pontiff in Steel Cage Match, but regardless of whether or not it is official, it is how poker fans determine who the best players in the world are. So, considering this fact, who really is the best?
Phil Hellmuth will tell anyone who is listening that he is the best, and he will flash all 11 bracelets at anyone who doubts his claim. Nobody will doubt that the sheer amount of jewelry he can produce is impressive, but only one of those represents a Main Event victory, and that was 19 years ago.
Doyle Brunson is only one bracelet behind Mr. Hellmuth, and can boast a pair of Main Event titles. Johnny Chan also boasts ten bracelets, with two of them being for victories in the Main Event.
Both Mr. Brunson and Mr.Chan have Phil beaten in the Main Event arena. Even though their victories are of a similar vintage as Hellmuth's, they still have more wins in poker's version of the Superbowl. So what counts here, quantity or quality?
What might not be a bad idea is to get these three together to settle the issue once and for all. It would be a three way version of Johnny Moss's famous confrontation with "Nick the Greek" Dandolos.
Whether this will ever happen is something that is up in the air. While we have often seen incarnations of two of these three legends at the same table on shows like Poker After Dark, we don't believe all three have ever been seated together in a high profile, high stakes setting. If someone could ever arrange it though, all three would probably jump at the chance to prove themselves as the best living poker player today.
