There is a strange fascination that human society has with rivalries and watching things fight. Godzilla vs. King Kong, Alien vs. Predator, Rosie O'Donnell vs. Common Sense; we have enjoyed each one of these contests. Maybe it's a flaw in our DNA, but we just adore putting a couple of bees in a jar and shaking it until they fight. It's even more fun if the "bees" are highly recognizable figures. With this in mind it would seem that Patrik Antonius and Doyle Brunson are going to carry on the proud tradition of a bitter rivalry.
It started with the alleged statement by Doyle Brunson that "he would do almost anything for a change to play Patrik Antonius heads-up." Doyle denies he uttered these words, and we don't know whether or not this is true or if the sport's elder statesman was simply taken out of context, but the origin is now irrelevant. Patrik's pride was ruffled and he shot back with a challenge that he would play Brunson for any amount, in any form of poker.
In reality what Brunson was really trying to convey was that some of the new internet-kids would be easy opponents for him. He has publicly shown nothing but respect for Patrik's massive amount of skill. Regardless of what Mr. Brunson said his words were interpreted in a manner that suggests that he believes that Antonius is an easy mark, and Patrik decided to defend his honor.
Let's face it, Brunson has not had a stellar record in big tournaments against the internet kids. This can be attributed to a number of things, not the least of which is that a tournament involves hundreds of people, and when your name is Brunson you are the biggest target in the room. Even the strongest, meanest bull in the world can be eaten alive by a pack of piranha. One on one is a different story. Under this circumstance the toothy little fish may find itself squished under the hoof of the angry ungulate.
If this ever happens it may be a changing-of-the-guard moment where the skills of the talented upstart overcome the prodigious abilities and experience of the leader of the pack. Of course considering the fact that Doyle is about as easy to take down as an enraged Mastodon, it can just as easily be a validation of his position as the King. Either way it will be interesting.
