This Land Is My Land

This Land Is My Land

Boundaries have always been a big thing. Vlad the Impaler used to decorate his border with the impaled bodies of his Turkish foes as a way to convey a simple message to those who made the choice to enter his tiny nation without permission: Abandon hope all ye who enter here.

Overall, boundaries exist to keep people you don't know, like, or particularly understand from entering one's little fiefdom. This subject is a political football today that not only affects a number of countries, but also the future of hundreds of politicians who would like to keep their part time jobs as high paid professional legislators. The issue does not start and end in the capitals of the world's nations though; it also affects such entities as the World Series of Poker.

Recently the WSOP looked at the world of online players and shouted "You shall not pass". Of course like so many other border issues today, what they say and what actually is happening are two different things.

It would seem that the boundary that separates online poker players from seats at the WSOP is as porous as the one that divides the United States from Mexico. Players and online providers are using loopholes as well as some rather creative means to ensure that players who win satellites on a particular site are warming a WSOP chair when the tournament kicks off. In fact, some sites are openly advertising that they have plenty of seats that they can give away.

The World Series of Poker made a lot of noise about how they were not allowing online qualifiers anymore. Unlike other border squabbles, this did not involve the online players taking jobs that the professionals didn't want, but more along the lines of the internet "amateurs" taking bracelets that the professionals wanted very badly. In the end, trying to put down a firewall to keep the cyber players out was a meaningless gesture. Online qualifiers are still getting in and established pros are still worrying about the effect this flood of new players will have on the final tables. In other words, the status quo remains.
