For years the United States has been borrowing from Europe to make American sports better. Back in the late 90's the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings looked eerily similar to the folks who chased Hitler's forces out of Stalingrad during World War II. If opposing players wanted to steal the verbal instructions the Wings players were shouting to each other on the ice, they would have needed a correspondence course in Russian or some quality time with Anna Kournikova.
Hockey is not the only sport that now sees a heavy European influence. The NBA, MLB, NFL, and American Soccer have all benefited from the presence of players that have been imported from Europe (England is not exactly happy that David Beckham now plies his trade in California, but most people in America are not happy that they get a former Spice Girl as part of the deal.)
Posh Spice aside, Europe has been a major supplier to the American sports community as of late. Harrah's has taken it upon itself to even the score by bringing the crown jewel of American Poker across the pond. In September of 2007 the World Series of Poker will host the inaugural events for the WSOP Europe. The tournaments will be played at three London clubs owned by London Clubs International. This will be the first time that a World Series of Poker bracelet has been awarded outside of the United States borders.
Things will kick-off on September 6th with a three-day H.O.R.S.E. event at LCI's newest casino in Leicester Square. This facility will open in April of 2007. The buy-in for this event will be £2500. For those who get their paychecks in American dollars, this is about $4900. Another tournament event will be a two-day, £5,000 ($9,800) buy-in, Pot Limit Omaha event. This will happen on September 8th, 2007.
Other undercard events will be sprinkled liberally throughout the entire run of the WSOP Europe. On September 10th, the WSOP Europe Main Event will have its start. This poker battle royal will be a six-day fight that sports a healthy £10,000 (approximately $19,600) buy-in.
For those lucky enough to participate in this tournament, it will be the sort of event that stays with you for your whole life. For those in the general public who will watch this tournament it will still be a treat to see.
