Considering how high tempers can run during a game of Texas Holdem, it is probably not a good idea to add blunt instruments like baseball bats and golf clubs into the potentially viable mix. Imagine what would happen if somebody inflicted a really bad beat on Phil Hellmuth at some point in a game. Despite the fact that combining poker with golf clubs is a good recipe for an assault charge, the World Series of Golf has decided to merge the two games into one event.
In all seriousness the World Series of Golf has been going on for some time. What they have done is use a Texas Holdem style betting structure with each hole. Players will ante, and then have the option to pass, bet, or fold as the situation dictates. Just like in any other poker tournament, when you are out of money, your day is done.
This may seem like a silly idea that ranks all the way up there with the eighties when some genius tried to combine the hard hitting game of football with a frisbee. Frisbee-Football had all the staying power of a Spice Girls song. Of course the World Series of Golf has something other silly sporting events don't have: a major broadcast contract.
CBS will be filming the event that kicks off today, and airing all the action on June 28 and 29. While on the surface this seems more like a gimmick than a serious sporting event, those participating are putting up a ten thousand dollars buy in so that they can take part in this unusual tournament.
Whether you think this is interesting or just plain silly, it should make for some entertaining television. Set your TiVo's for the end of June to catch this unique competition.
