The Internet Player of the Year Is...

We are now into that time of the year when the world's most pampered people get dressed and gather for the purpose of congratulating each other for another successful year of getting the most out of what amounts to a part time job. For those who are confused about what we are referring to, this is the season when the entertainment industry award shows become a monument to the celebration of mediocrity. So who says that Hollywood stars and recording artists should have all the fun? They are not the only ones who can celebrate the best in their industry.

Internet Poker Rankings has announced their 2007 Internet Player of the Year, and the winner is... (I hate when I can't get the envelope open)... Jon "PearlJammer" Turner.

While it is true that giving a player the title of Internet Player of the Year doesn't quite have the same allure associated with it as somebody in a low cut dress accepting a statue of a naked bald man as an award for being declared Hollywood's best actress, but there is more substance to the Internet Poker Rankings POY award.

PearlJammer didn't achieve the distinction of being 2007's best online player because he is more likeable than the rest of the field, or he flashed some cleavage at the judges (that's a disturbing image). He is the Player of the Year because he basically beat the stuffing out of the rest of the online field all year long. Not only has he been the person on the net that people least wanted to see show up at their table, but who can forget his play at the 2007 Aussie Millions? His daring, risk taking approach to that tourney, combined with his runner-up finish, basically turned him into the poker version of Errol Flynn.

While we can't expect Kate Hudson and Charlize Theron to throw down and get into a hair pulling, clothes tearing fight over who should be this year's best supporting actress, the Oscars and awards like it are basically a popularity contest. Jon Turner earned his award. Even though there is no red carpet for him to drag his significant other across, his accomplishment is far more honest. We congratulate Jon "PearlJammer" Turner, and wish him luck in 2008!
