Sometimes you have to wonder if the government and police have better things to do with their time. In the case of Eliot Spitzer that better thing was named Ashley Dupr?. He is just the latest in a long tradition of American politicians who would rather legislate on moral issues than actually do their job of enforcing the law. While he made a career of smashing prostitution rings before he finally got caught with his favorite appendage in Ms. Dupr?'s cookie jar, he was the poster child for going after crimes that ensured headlines, but did very little to impact the lives of the average citizen.

It is the Spitzer type of legislator who is responsible for enforcing the UIGEA. Today we got news that put something as petty as persecuting those who dare to play poker online into perspective.

We have recently heard the sad news that Ernest Scherer Jr. and his wife have both passed away. While any death is tragic, this one is doubly so. Not because he and his wife died together, but because this was not an accident: they were brutally murdered. "They were beaten severely," said Detective Sgt. Scott Dudek, a homicide investigator for the Alameda County Sheriff's Department. "There was a lot of blood everywhere. These people suffered a great deal."

So far the people who perpetrated this horrible crime have not yet been found. While we are not suggesting that law enforcement is not pursuing this murder vigorously, we are simply saying that much of their manpower is diverted away chasing the online poker industry, trying to figure out who is paying for sex as opposed to those who are just getting lucky, and a large bulk of the men in blue are assigned to punishing those who drive to fast.

There are some states for whom online poker is a felony on par with child abuse or rape. Doesn't the brutal murder of the Scherers put into perspective the real crimes that are happening while the politicians and police are busy chasing folks who play cards in cyberspace?
