Generally the best way to tell if a politician is lying is to check and see if their mouth is moving. If their jaw is going up and down and words are coming out of it, chances are what you are hearing is a deception. Add to the ever present "misstatements" the fact that politics is a blood sport where even your teammates might drive a knife between your shoulder blades and you have a pretty harsh environment. Anybody who calls these surroundings their home will either eventually wind up in a room with soft walls, curled up in the fetal position and sucking their thumb, or they will become jaded and suspicious of anyone not wearing a Barney the Dinosaur costume. Those who fall into the first category can look forward to a future as a potted plant. Those who conform to the latter description probably will make really good poker players.
Political consultant Nancy Todd Tyner has called this caustic environment home sweet home for most of her career. So after navigating through the strange web of half truths, distraction techniques, and scapegoating that goes with her day job, sniffing out bluffs at the poker table would be almost second nature. Her skill at putting an opponent on a hand despite all the mixed signals they try to send out was on full display at the Bellagio during the inaugural WPT Ladies Championship.
Nancy went toe to toe with some of the biggest names in the game including JJ Liu, Kathy Liebert, Evelyn Ng, Jennifer Tilly, Cyndy Violette, Erica Schoenberg, Karina Jett, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, Van Nguyen, Lily "Mrs. Grinder" Mizrachi and Maureen Feduniak.
After having her hand raised in victory during this historic win she was jubilant and said the following about her triumph: "My win was terrific, it was hard fought, and I was definitely the underdog." Tyner went into the final table in third place. "It reminded me of most of my campaigns where I was down long before I started, like David versus Goliath."
This was the first of two dramatic wins during the World Poker Tour Championship weekend. We look forward to seeing much more from this player. Congratulations Nancy Todd Tyner!
