When another story comes out that has something climbed on top of Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, nobody takes much notice. This is the sort of news that we simply chalk up to an average night in Hollywood while secretly hoping that somebody has had the presence of mind to bring along a video camera with night vision capabilities. Of course some heads might turn if it was discovered that Phil Hellmuth or Doyle Brunson were the one atop the notorious pop-tarts. If it turns out that Erica Schoenberg's name is thrown into the mix, most of the male population will spontaneously combust out of sheer joy. The reality is that these poker players, along with dozens of others have topped the world's most dysfunctional blondes, along with a whole host of other people.
For the second year in a row Lycos has reported that the word "poker" is the most used search term in cyberspace. Considering the fact that the year has included dog fighting quarterbacks going to prison, a steroid tainted home run record, Britney Spears taking a casual attitude towards underwear, the star of High School musical having pictures snapped of her after her clothes mysteriously fell off, and a United States Senator involved in a toe tapping scandal that may or may not have involved the words "Glory Hole" - with all this happening, people still managed to stay interested enough in the game of poker to make it Lycos' most used search term.
For many it is a mystery why a game that is about as visually exciting as Barbara Walters in a thong continues to capture the attention of an international audience. By contrast more people were interested in what happened at the WSOP than David Beckham and his Spice Girl wife. This trend may continue through 2008, but even if poker cannot compete with a contentious American Presidential election and the Olympics, it will probably still be in the top five.
