It would seem that most people who call themselves Jesus would be asking for a sudden, violent lightning bolt to the brain stem. Somehow Chris "Jesus" Ferguson has managed to get by just fine while sporting a nickname that many would consider sacrilegious. Not only has he thrived, but he has also managed to pull off a few miracles in the past. Most recently he performed the feat of taking home the National Heads-Up Championship.
Beating Andy Bloch for the Championship wasn't exactly turning water into wine, but considering how much trouble the "classic" players have had recently in big events, this may have qualified as turning a sow's ear into a Prada product.
Since the internet kids have become a dominant force in the world of professional poker, the more familiar names have been having a tough slog in major events. Last year's WSOP saw a large number of players taking home bracelets who probably celebrated their victories at Chuck E Cheese instead of the local bars and strip joints.
This win at the National Heads-Up Poker Championship was a good start for the game's older guard as we head into the season that includes both the World Poker Tour Championship and the World Series of Poker. It also may be a sign that players are adapting to the Wild West style that the internet types are bringing to the tournament circuit.
Granted, not every big name player has struggled against the Barney generation. Phil Hellmuth still manages to whine his way to championship after championship. Let's see what the next few months bring in terms of victories for the over 40 set. Hopefully, we will see Doyle Brunson make it out of the first round of a WSOP tournament this year.
