With the World Series of Poker firmly in our rear view mirror, this does not mean that the last of the bracelets have been handed out this year. While we are all aware that final, Main Event, bracelet will be sorted out this November, we are less than two months away from the start of the World Series of Poker Europe. Last year a relatively anonymous player came up from the ranks to smack the established pros in the face and take the championship. Will that be what happens this year?
Nobody will doubt that this year's WSOP at the Rio was "The year of the pro". That particular cliche was tossed about to the point where more than one journalist should have had those words tattooed somewhere on their bodies. Considering most of the poker related press, the majority of them would have to do something rude with a trench coat to show off any words they have permanently inked on their person. While pros made a good showing at the WSOP, was this because they have stepped up their game, or because the laws against online gaming in the United States have suppressed a lot of North American online players?
Europe is generally more tolerant when it comes to letting people sort out for themselves what do with their money when it comes to gaming online. With no single piece of legislation bringing online poker to a halt in Europe, internet players continue to thrive. There is every chance that the WSOP Europe will be dominated by online players. This means that it will be all the more difficult for Phil Hellmuth to pad his lead over the rest of the sport while Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson will be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to tying the Poker Brat in the bracelet count.
