In the United States this week marks the Thanksgiving celebration - a holiday that celebrates the prosperity of the nation by doing to the turkey population what the Minotaur did to anyone who didn't show the proper level of appreciation for his freakish bovine head. Despite the annual slaughter of a bird that falls squarely into the "easily distracted by shiny objects" category, a distinction it shares with Britney Spears and most products of the public education system, America is not the world, and not everyone celebrates this holiday. The one thing we have in common is that at this point in time most of the civilized world starts to gear up for the Christmas season. This means that we should start thinking about those who may be less fortunate than we are.
The poker world has its share of people who could be considered "less fortunate". Daniel Negraneau, for one, who despite the fact that he is almost psychically able to nail down what his opponent is holding has had a rough year in terms of tournament success; considering how often Doyle Brunson has exploded on the launch pad during any WSOP event one would have to say he has the unfortunate distinction of having more in common with the Chinese Space than he does with his former, more successful self; and we should show some charitable pity towards Phil Hellmuth because, well, the guy is a Brat. It will probably take three ghosts, some rather nasty flashbacks, and fear for his own mortality to change him though.
Of course we are just having a bit of fun here, but at the beginning of this Christmas season, think of the real people who are truly less fortunate and what you might be able to do for them. If you have done well playing poker this year, karma is always a good thing to have on your side and donating some of your profits to a worthy charity can be nothing but helpful. Those who have not done so well, be thankful that you have the disposable income to play poker with, and perhaps a few hands worth of the money you will play with in the near future can go into the hat for the needy. Helping the less fortunate, especially at this time of year when need is greatest, is a way to use our blessings in a way that ensures everyone wins.
