Generation Battle at the WSOP

Generation Battle at the WSOP

Most people over the age of 40 don't quite get the texting thing. While they are busy not getting typing messages with your thumbs when a perfectly proper phone call would accomplish the same thing, they also don't get bellybutton rings, tramp stamps, and how showing "plumber's crack" became fashionable. Poker players who fall into the category of "The Greatest Generation", "The Babyboomers", or the start of "Generation X" generally play their poker in casinos. Those who proudly proclaim themselves members of Generation Y or Generation 0 seem to prefer their Holdem over the internet. In a week these two forces will meet again at the World Series of Poker and fight for bracelets and bragging rights.

At the start of the World Series of Poker it was a gathering of highly skilled players getting together for the purpose of figuring out who was the best of the best. Of course this was back in the days when a microchip was the tiny broken pieces of Pringles at the bottom of the can. Today the internet kids who are not old enough to walk into a casino are actively playing poker online. By the time they come of age they have played hundreds of thousands of hands and have the sort of skill that was previously unheard of in kids so young.

The WSOP has now become a poker battleground for the generations. We have heard many a mature player say how much they "can't stand those internet kids", while the online generation talks about how frustrated they are by the less wide open style of their elders. Over the last couple of years, the youngsters have been gaining ground but the classic players are still putting up a good fight. So what generation will come out on top this year? It's anybody's guess.
