The last two people of Asian decent to proudly sport the nickname, "The Dragon", were Bruce Lee and professional wrestler Ricky Steamboat. Let's face it these two could have called themselves Shirley Temple or Liberace for all it mattered: both of these men could easily mess up the body of an antagonist in ways that only a good, stout Cuisinart could successfully replicate. This of course made them exactly the sort of people who should have a profoundly manly nickname like "The Dragon". When one looks at David Pham in comparison to the two previously mentioned gentlemen and throws the word "dragon" into the mix, Mr. Pham doesn't seem to measure up.
Despite the fact that the only critters who would feel threatened by David are those of the wiener dog variety, he is a buzz saw at a poker table. He is as dangerous to his opponent's stack of chips as Bruce Lee was to any part of an enemy's body that he could reach with his foot. With this in mind, most would be in agreement that David Pham is once again deserving of Card Player Media's Poker Player of the Year award.
This is not the first time that Pham has been called the best player over a 365 day period by the publishers of Card Player Magazine. He also won the player of the year award back in 2000 and became part of a very small fraternity of players that Card Player Media has honored with this prestigious award.
David scored money finishes in 18 tournaments this year, and was a familiar face at final tables. He made the trip to the last table 11 times in 2007. Four of these times he came away with the victory. This gave him a total of 6,562 points - almost a thousand more than the second place finisher.
Despite the fact that David Pham has probably not mastered the roundhouse kick or the flying body slam, his abilities in the game of poker make him a worthy successor to the name, "The Dragon".
