As we move from the cold weather into spring a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love. Of course there is a whole population of guys who are either married or their "Darth Vader Lives!" tattoo scares off potential mates. For these people, their thoughts probably turn to the summer movie season and all the big budget releases that are coming out this year.
It would seem the summer months will be lousy with superheroes, digitized monsters (some of us still long for the old "stop motion" days), and lots of really big explosions. So how does a movie without a budget that would make Warren Buffett cry compete with films where guys in advanced armor uphold the rule of law by laying the smack down on evil doers without the benefit of a trial? You get Burt Reynolds and Shannon Elizabeth to headline and throw in the game of poker.
While it is true that Burt hasn't really made an interesting movie since Ned Beatty was forced to squeal like a pig during a scene in "Deliverance" that would have been well received in any maximum security prison, he will be carrying the water as the main character in the summer poker film "Deal".
Burt plays a world class poker player who after a lifetime of dealing with a self destructive gambling addiction finally has his compulsions under control. He takes a talented college aged poker player under his wing and imparts most of his knowledge to him. Eventually they wind up facing off against each other at the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Anybody who has seen Rocky V has already seen this movie. It is basically the same story only without all the punching and yelling for Adrian. Of course they have included Shannon Elizabeth into the mix. This not only gives the film some credibility in the poker world, but most guys would probably look at Ms. Elizabeth rather than watch Iron Man try to score with Gwyneth Paltrow.
