For almost 20 years The Simpsons have been corrupting society in ways that Heavy Metal and "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" could only dream of. Long before a hapless senator from Idaho introduced us to the topic of trolling for nookie in the stalls of men's rooms, The Simpsons were discussing the Glory Hole as one of man's greatest accomplishments. Add to this the fact that Homer once tried to trick God into blessing his theft of Groundskeeper Willy's retirement grease, and he counts the fat little Dixie Chick as one of the people on his enemies list, and you have a sordid little cartoon family that has dragged the culture into the muck with them. Isn't it about time that they gave something back to the public that they have taken so much from?
On Saturday September 29th, Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, will be the hostess of the 2nd Annual Monte Carlo Night in Northridge, CA. This is a charity event and a way for Ms. Cartwright to pay a small penance for introducing the term "eat my shorts" to the cultural lexicon.
She will not be alone in her hosting duties as Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants will also be on hand to emcee the event. He will presumably working off some residual guilt of his own. Even though the folks presenting this charity gambling event make their livings by giving two-dimensional characters personalities and life, there will be real people on hand to play some serious Texas Holdem.
Some of the celebrities expected to attend are Brad Garrett, Chris and Danny Masterson, Patrick Cassidy, Chris Slade, Laura Prepon, Marisol Nichols and Bruce Davison. Among the poker pros who intend to play are Johnny Chan, Todd Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, Steve Dannenmann, Jamie Gold, Jennifer Harman, Susie Isaacs, Kenna James, Mary Jones, Mel Judah, Liz Lieu, Daniel Negreanu and Marco Traniello.
A $500 donation gets anybody in the door to the festivities, and into the Holdem tournament. Those who do well at the poker table can win one of five seats to a WSOP Satellite tournament. For the moment let's forget that this might be a path to World Series of Poker gold, and remember that the money raised here will go to a really good cause. Funds from the event will go to the Devonshire PALS (Police Activities League Supporters) Youth Center for at-risk children. A noble endeavor to say the least.
