Ante Up for Africa

Ante Up for Africa

Anybody who doesn't know about the tragic events happening in Darfur probably has their mail delivered to them under a rock. The genocidal conflict that is raging in that region of the world is marked by the sort of barbarism that most people associate with the dark ages: a time when impaling and beheadings were about as commonplace as traffic jams are today. Most of us look upon this sort of human tragedy with the sort of detached sorrow usually reserved for viewing the aftermath of a car accident. While passing by the carnage a lot of folks inevitably think, "You know, someone ought to do something about that."

Well, Annie Duke and Don Cheadle have put their heads together and decided to do what they can to help those affected by this conflict.

Last year Annie and Don held the inaugural "Ante Up for Africa" tournament at the World Series of Poker. It was an absolutely smashing success. Celebrities and professionals alike decided to put their money down to participate in this event. Everyone who attended voluntarily agreed that not only should the money generated by this go to the Darfur cause, but also the prize money claimed by the eventual tournament winner should be donated to help the victims of this conflict. In the end over $400,000 was raised for this worthy cause.

The success of the event last year meant that Annie and Don will be doing this again at the 2008 World Series of Poker. This year's installment of a tournament that is obviously going to keep going until the violence stops will be held at the Rio All Suites Hotel on Wednesday, July 2nd. The chips drop at 2:00pm.

This is not only a very important cause, but the event itself is an absolute blast. Where else can you have so much fun while saving a little piece of the world
