The film High Roller - The Stu Ungar Story features a remarkable portrayal of master card player and self-destructive junkie Stu Ungar by Michael Imperioli.
Imperioli does an artful job of taking the movie watcher back and forth through the amazing twists and turns, ups and downs of Ungars both tragic and impressive life. Ungar was known around Vegas as The Kid, and what a kid he was. Were taken from a 17-year-old wonder boy story of a win at the World Series of Poker through a roller coaster self-destructive life wasted by coke, alcohol, and dashed dreams. All that is experienced through shifts in time throughout the film that succeed in keeping the viewer fixated on the story. A highly aggressive poker player who would build up a mountain of chips and then ride it out while other players slowly capitulated, Ungar dominated the game for the few years he was in it. The film Stuey is a birds-eye view of a ride to the top of the mountain of success, and then a bungee-jump into a canyon of failure and utter despair without the cord attached.
The real Stu Ungar high-rolled himself to an unequalled three World Series of Poker championships, winning a reported $30 million is his brief career - more than $2 million in official tournament play. Despite the kind nickname The Kid bestowed upon him by quite a few card sharks, Ungar once said many other more straightforward (and probably jealous) players called him The Freak.
He was found dead in a hotel room in 1998 with $800 to his name. Poker players will see a variety of real and current card players supporting the story by performing cameo roles. Directed by A.W. Vidmer. Michael Pasternak (The Jazz Singer), Pat Morita (The Karate Kid), Joe LaDue (Indecent Proposal), Michael Nouri (Little Vegas), and Steve Schirripa (The Sopranos) also lend their hands in this great film.
