Nick Moran's "The Poker Academy: Learn to Win at Poker" features Mike Reid and Jakki Degg. This Universal Pictures, UK DVD was released in 2005 and has since received mixed reviews. "Learn to Win" sways greatly from the typical step-by-step, "demonstration with narration" type instructional poker DVD's that many of us are accustomed to. "Learn to Win" actually plays out in the form of a short film in which Lee Jackson - banned from the world's classiest casinos - creates his own poker academy. From the drama played out in the short story - viewers are to learn how to win at poker.
The novel approach to this DVD is unique - but it is likely best considered entertainment with some opportunities to learn and definitely suited for beginners. "The Basic Principles of Texas Holdem", "Hand Rankings", "Calculating Your Potential Hand", "How to Bet to Win" and "Advanced Bluffing Skills" are sections covered in the DVD. High quality graphics are used throughout to explain the action as it occurs.
"Learn to Win's" short story approach could be taken with a grain of salt - it will appeal to some viewers who find the approach refreshing - others might be disappointed in the lack of complete, hands on "here's how you do this" instruction. This is not the type of DVD to provide a lot of instantly workable tips for making your game better. If you are a true beginner the DVD will help you learn the most basic aspects of poker. Advanced techniques are essentially non-existent on this DVD - but it does offer a decent introduction to Texas Holdem for those who have never played the game.
Moran's "Learn to Win" is available for rent or purchase at several UK based outlets and online.
