There have been few presidents as controversial as the one currently sitting in the oval office. George W. Bush, son of former President George Herbert Walker Bush, was governor of the state of Texas so perhaps it is appropriate that he is also a poker player, considering the popularity of the game called Texas Holdem. Bush has had to make tough decisions in office, as has every president, but his presidency has been marked by a great terrorist tragedy, a declaration of war, and plenty of scandals. Through it all Bush has done his best to remain stoic and true to form, and one part of his personality that may help him get through it every day is his fun, competitive nature.
Bush comes from a fine pedigree so it is not surprising that he received a fine education. During his time at the Harvard Business School, Bush was known as an enthusiastic and skilled poker player. This reputation may have been one reason why the US playing card company gifted the president with two custom poker chip sets for Christmas. While there may not be Texas Holdem tournaments taking place in the West Wing, Bush's poker education shines through in his political career. There have been enough critics of the president, including criticizing his manner of speaking and suggesting that he is lacking in intelligence. It appears, however, that - like a good poker player - Bush has been slow playing his critics, downplaying his strengths until such time as he needs to flex his muscles. While his popular rating has moved up and down quite frequently during his two terms in office, odds are good that if he could get any poker loving critics to sit across the felt from him, they have a lot more positive things to say.
