The Top Poker Rooms in the U.S.: The Gold Strike in Tunica, Mississippi

Poker came to America in the gambling halls of New Orleans, traveled to the bars and backrooms of the pioneering West and then flourished on the gambling boats that journeyed up and down the great Mississippi River. Today, on 24 acres along the banks of the Mississippi, at The Gold Strike Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi, poker still flourishes.

The Gold Strike Hotel and Casino, about 20 miles outside of Memphis, with 31 stories and 1,160 rooms, is the tallest building in Tunica/Robinsonville area. The complex also features a 800-seat Millenium Theater and restaurants ranging from fast-serve to formal sit-down. Many of the hotel rooms feature views of that same Mississippi River.

The 48,000 square foot Casino features over 1400 slot machines, 40 table games and a non-smoking Poker Room with 14 tables. Aficionados say that the Gold Strike has the best weekday games in Mississippi.

The Gold Strike, true to its name, offers players a slew of tournaments in which to strike gold. Regular poker tournaments include the Red Eye Tournament on Mondays ($50 buy-in, $15 entry fee), the Early Bird Tournament on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays ($25 buy-in, $10 entry fee); the Super Tuesday Tournaments ($75 buy-in, $15 entry fee), the Thursday Freeze Out Tournament ($100 buy-in, $20 entry fee), the Friday Bonus Chips Tournament ($100 buy-in, $20 entry fee), the Bounty Poker Tournament on Sundays ($50 buy-in, $15 entry fee) and, once a month on the first Sunday, a $10,000 Guarantee Poker Tournament, with a $300 buy-in and a $35 entry fee. Players are awarded “tournament bucks” at all tournaments, which can be used for buy-in at the $10,000 Guarantee Poker Tournament. Major tournaments at the Gold Strike include the World Poker Open.
