Where is the world’s largest casino? Monte Carlo? Vegas? Atlantic City? Wrong. In New England, home to the Foxwoods Resort Casino.
If their Native American ancestors had tried to divine their future, it is hard to imagine they would have envisioned this massive complex for the Mashantucket Pequot tribe. Six casinos, three hotels, 25 eateries, a 4,000-seat arena, Club BB King, plus a nearby, popular Mashantucket Pequot Museum.
The Poker Room, non-smoking and open 24 hours, features 76 tables and tableside food and drink. Located in the Rainmaker Casino, it is one of the largest Poker Rooms on the planet, and its featured games are 7-Card Stud, Texas Hold'em and Omaha. Another 15-20 tables are added for poker tournaments. On many nights and weekends, you should expect a wait to play, but the electronic queue system can be seen throughout the room.
Daily tournaments feature No Limit Hold’em, Limit Hold’em, Omaha and 7-Card Stud, with more tables featuring No Limit Hold’em. The lower-limit tables are more popular, as one might imagine, offering $2-4 limit Texas Hold'em, $1-2 No Limit Hold’em and $1-5 7-Card Stud. There are usually some $4-8 Hold’em tables, and several with limits of $20-40; on Saturdays and Sunday, expect limits going up to $150-300.
Major tournaments at Foxwoods include the Foxwoods Poker Classic and the World Poker Finals. Foxwoods was the first casino to sign up as a location for the World Poker Tour. There are also satellite tournaments, offering a way for players to win a seat the WPT Championships, and it has been very successful. In fact, in 2004, more than 1/3 of the finalists for the WPT Championships won their seat through these tournaments. The fee to participate in one of these satellite tournaments is generally about $60.
