From Start to Sit (N' Go) - The Poker Room Interface

What is it like playing poker online? Pretty simple, actually, but there is a small learning curve, and this article is designed to get you through it as fast as possible, so you can get to the tables and have some fun.

The poker room software you downloaded will have a list of tables; these are the ongoing games you can take part in. They will be divided by a few major and a few minor categories. First, play money tables will be indicated, where you can take your play chips and test out the interface (highly recommended), then the tables will be dived into cash games and tournaments.

From there the tables are divided into game type (Texas Hold'em versus Omaha, for example) and tournament type (multi-table versus sit and go). Each listing for a table will tell you the limits (how much you are playing for and with) how many players are in the game, and other bits of info such as the average pot size. Typically all you need do to join a table is double click on the listing, and a separate window will open.

The table window will vary in graphic complexity based on the poker site. If you are easily distracted or just a meat and potatoes, serious poker player, you might go for the simple interfaces. A table and seats are shown. For cash games, if there are no icons or names by a seat, it is open; double click on it to "sit down." You will be prompted as to the amount of chips you want to bring to the table, then you are in.

Typically there are check boxes for options like automatically posting the blinds, automatically mucking your hand, etc. A chat window will allow you to communicate with other players, and the 'dealer' will explain what happens here in each hand.

It is very easy to get around, once you get used to it, which should not take long. The best thing to do is jump in to a play money cash game and ignore the cards for a while; just poke around the window and discover what you can do.
