Nothing is better than a classic rags to riches story. Nothing is better than rooting for someone who will appreciate a big win. And nothing is better than a humble, big-hearted winner. All such things define the makings of the newly crowned WSOP champ - 2007 Main Event winner Jerry Yang.
Growing up, Yang could have never envisioned the wealth he now has. Born in politically ravaged Laos, poverty was a fact of life for Yang as a youngster. Looking back, Yang willingly declares that his happiest moment came when news arrived that his father had permission to move his family to the United States. This new ray of hope brought his family to a new world where destitution would give way to greater life comforts and success. Now - after taking his mere $225 and turning it into over $8.2 million, Yang is set for a life of comforts beyond his greatest childhood dreams. After a 16 hour reign where he had almost complete domination of the final table, Yang completed his straight with a river card, a six, and the rest was history. Family and friends were on hand to celebrate his victory, and with emotions running high, Yang did not forget to include the dealer, giving her an appreciative bear hug. Yang, 39, resides with his wife and six children in Temecula, California. A picture of the children goes with him to poker games - where he kisses it for luck prior to diving in for play. He has risen above his impoverished roots to earn a graduate degree in health psychology. He works full-time as a psychologist and social worker. His dedication to others does not stop with his chosen career. Despite the newfound wealth, Yang is dedicated to helping others and has donated 10% of his earnings to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Ronald McDonald House, and Feed the Children.
