Brian Roberts became a gambler during the Korean War. He emerged from a four-year hitch in the U.S. Navy. And there he also earned his colorful nickname – Sailor. In fact he began to work as a caddie when he was 12 years old. Then Korean War. And then… the Fellowship of Hold’em Players. By this fellowship I mean: Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts himself.
Doyle wrote in his “Super System”: “Sailor, Slim and I stuck together for six years or so and we had some mighty fine times. Once in a while we were down, but mostly we managed to hold our own better than most. Our partnership finally broke up after our first big trip to Las Vegas. We lost our entire bankroll (close to six figures) and believe me there’s nothing more cantankerous than three broke gamblers, but we have remained close friends to this day”.
All members of this poker fellowship became the WSOP winners. Sailor – in 1975, though his favorite game was Deuce to Seven Lowball. Was… Because he died from sclerosis caused by hepatitis.
