Doyle Brunson: "A Man With Money Is No Match Against a Man on a Mission"

Doyle Brunson managed to win at the WSOP two times in a row (1976,1977). But it is nothing when compared to his contribution to the game: he wrote a genius book, which became a "Bible" of poker, he was the first to note that gambling is a respectable profession. Brunson is great in everything.

Life   "I'm just a country farm boy who grew up in a tiny town of less than 100 people," Doyle says about himself. Nobody could foresee his future. Doyle had all prerequisites for becoming a professional athlete. But a knee injury helped him to understand his true calling.   He tried to work as a salesman, but when he discovered that he "could make more money in one pot that what was in that entire paycheck selling a week of office supplies" it was no doubt for him what career to choose. In 1950s poker was rather dangerous game, but Doyle insists that it made this game really good.   At the same time (1950s) Doyle met Amarillo "Slim" and Sailor Roberts who joined him and they began to travel together. It was a good partnership: three giants. Game   Back to 1950s it wasn't that easy to improve your game skill. Doyle had to do all the strategy work without any computers. He played poker alone, dealt one hand, another and tried to imagine the actions that will follow that. Another way for Doyle to advance in poker was to discuss different situations with Amarillo. They spent sleepless nights talking about poker games.   Doyle worked out his own style: he became an aggressive player like most of the best players. His success lies in deep knowledge of poker players' psychology.   Brunson was the first to write that small pairs are valuable in no-limit. In addition to it he knew that inexperienced, tight-weak player would not bet if he hadn't a great starting hand. Doyle managed to win even if they had.   Doyle's aggressive game led him to the first place at the WSOP. He finished these two times with the same hand - 10-2. Now it's known as "Doyle Brunson" Contribution to the Game   Besides "Doyle Brunson" this brilliant player is known as the author of so-called poker Bible - we mean his "Super System: How I Made Over $1,000,000 Playing Poker". This book has also sections written by Mike Caro, Joey Hawthorne, Chip Reese, Bobby and David Sklansky. The main, of course, belongs to Brunson.   Doyle says he wished he would never write this book. He gave all his poker knowledge to the people leaving nothing for himself. That's why (it's not only our opinion) he has not won again after it.   After "Super System" there was another book - "According to Doyle". It included his best columns about poker by Brunson. Yes, he had not only a poker player talent. He wrote several texts for the old Gambling Times magazine. Doyle tried to prove that gambling is a respectable profession.
