Scott Clements: Just Taking Care of Business

Keep your eyes open for Scott Clements. Although you will find him sitting at high-end poker tables or even at the World Series of Poker, sooner or later we might see him at the other end of those tables in a suit and tie. And although that might not be very shocking, it would convey even stronger his attitude toward the game: a1 business.

Clements likes to approach his game of professional tournament poker player with an emphasis on the word "professional." He treats it like a business. And in the real world of business the model is still the same: only the winners or the ones with strong success strategies are left standing (or in his case, sitting).  Now other than that suit and tie (we haven't spotted him in one yet, but who knows), Scott probably wouldn't take his protocol as far as some of the professional pool players do, walking in with custom cases caring custom-made pool sticks or cues - but you will certainly see it in his eyes (if he is not wearing shades). On his trip to Las Vegas last year for the 2006 World Series of Poker - a transition from the mountains to the desert - those eyes got quite big as he advanced in the Omaha Hi/Lo event, Event 24.  Scott refused to stay on the Strip, wanting to avoid all the distractions (remember, this was a "business trip" for him). By day three of this event, 342 players were already knocked out, leaving just eight and Scott at the final table. The players in the final made this championship look like a Donald Trump all-star lineup sitting at the business round table dealing millions – Brent Carter, Peter Costa, Thor Hansen and Martin Corpuz – a total of 13 bracelets among that crowd. The poker prize that night was not a million, but still a mouth-watering $301,175. In the end, Clements took care of business, and took care of that 300-plus grand.
