When discussing the World Series of Poker, it is easy to get swept away in the excitement of the main event. Granted, it is called the "main event" for a reason, and the combination of incredibly high stakes and the world's stiffest competition make for an incredible show. However, the WSOP is a multiple-month affair, and there are many fine players that haven't won the main event, yet still wear the golden bracelet that marks them as a champion. One such player is Rafi Amit, who won the Pot-Limit Omaha event in the 2005 World Series of Poker.
Anyone who follows poker diligently will probably remember Mr. Amit from the 2005 WSOP, where he was given a ten-minute penalty for using the "f-word" during the final PLO table. More incredible was the fact that Amit still continued to cause trouble even during his absence from the game, mocking the other players and trash talking his opponents from the sidelines. Even after a ten minute absence, during which time almost $200K worth of chips had gone from Amit to his competitors, at the time 25-year old Rafi Amit managed to come back and take the lead, winning the game and taking home $511, 835. This was quite an impressive feat since this final table in the World Series of Poker was Amit's first final table in his three year poker career. Amit lives in Holon, Israel, and his World Series of Poker win seems to be the only major win for the young poker star. Regardless, Rafi Amit will be the man to beat at the Pot-Limit Omaha event in the 2006 World Series of Poker. As long as Amit watches his language and keeps his temper, he should be tough competition for even the most experienced poker players.
